Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven… – Matt 5:44-45a
Being in God’s family – becoming God’s son or daughter through Jesus Christ – means loving the unlovable. We get no credit for loving only those people who are “good” to us. Even the most wicked men and women in the world can fulfill that requirement. Jesus asks us to do the unthinkable: to love the people in our lives who are absolutely undeserving of our love!
Loving the unlovable is fundamental to becoming more like Jesus. Let’s be honest: not too long ago, you and I were unlovable. We were dead in our sin (Eph 2:1, 5), and completely beyond redemption. Yet God so loved us, “…that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (Jn 3:16).
God gave everything He had to save you when you deserved it the least. Will you give of yourself to save others even if they don’t deserve it? One single act of compassion might serve as the introduction to Jesus they desperately need.
Father, help me to remember that I was once beyond redemption. You saw through my sin; and you saw past my wickedness. You made me clean at the foot of the Cross! Help me to demonstrate my gratefulness by reaching out to others.
