Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.” Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly. – Matt 26:73-75
Peter denied Jesus. He had promised Jesus he wouldn’t do this (see v 35)! He had given Jesus his word; but he still fell short.
Jesus had warned His disciples not to deny Him:
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”- Matt 10:32-33
Peter was in direct violation of Jesus’ teaching. Peter had failed!
Yet look at the grace Jesus shows him. In John 21, after the Resurrection, Jesus restores Peter completely. Peter had denied Jesus three times, but Jesus restored Peter three times: once for every denial!
[Jesus] said to [Peter] the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.” – Jn 21:17
For every denial, there is a restoration. For every failure, there is a future. For every sin, there is grace! Whatever you have done: God forgives you. Turn to Him, and receive His grace: His unmerited favor. Peter wasn’t perfect, but Jesus restored him; and you’re not perfect, but God has already forgiven you!
Father, thank You for Your grace! Thank You for restoration. I am far from perfect; but I know Your grace is perfect, in Jesus’ name!
