Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have prepared for those who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men!

– Ps 31:19

God’s goodness is reserved for those who fear Him. However, the Bible’s definition of fear is different than ours. When we see, “fear God,” we think, “be afraid of Him.” This is not, however, what the Bible intends to convey.

David defines what it means to fear God in the second half of this verse: trusting Him in the presence of the sons of men. To fear God is to trust Him at all times: even when the odds seem stacked against you, and all of your unsaved friends tell you you’re crazy.

A Biblical fear of God is one of reverence and respect. A Biblical fear of God comes from a place of worship, not doubt. A Biblical fear of God arises from confidence in everything God can do; never from shame of all the areas we come up short.

We should all fear God; but those of us who have entered into Covenant with Him should never be afraid.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for defining Biblical fear. I will trust You at all times, because I know that You are the God of the universe. You formed the world and everything in it, and You can do anything You desire. Help me to live my life with full confidence in You!
