Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then Solomon awoke; and indeed it had been a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants. – 1 Kings 3:15

This dream was the most significant encounter Solomon ever had with God. In Solomon’s own words, prior to this encounter, he was a “little child” (1 Kings 3:7): he had the monumental task of reigning over Israel, but he had no idea how to get it done. So God came and spoke to him. This dream meant the world to Solomon. Without it, he would never have become the king God destined him to be. But I want to ask you a question this morning: if God came to you in a dream, would you believe it was Him?

Dreams are drastically under-valued in our society. Scientists have debated the importance of dreams, proposing via the activation-synthesis hypothesis that, “…dreams don’t actually mean anything: they are merely electrical brain impulses that pull random thoughts and imagery from our memories.”[1] Secular research would have us believe that dreams are absolutely meaningless! But God’s word says otherwise.

When Solomon woke up, he had a choice: would be believe God had really spoken to him? Or would be pass of this supernatural, destiny-shaping dream as a random occurrence – a firing of neurons that he should simply ignore?

You and I have the same choice. When God speaks, it is so easy to miss His voice. Will you have faith that you are hearing Him, just as Solomon did?

Prayer:

Father, speak to me in dreams! Make me sensitive to Your voice, in Jesus’ name. When You speak, I will listen: whether I am asleep or awake!
