Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Then Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?” So Saul eyed David from that day forward. – 1 Sam 18:8-9
Saul should have been happy. He had it all! He was king over Israel. He was winning battle after battle. The people loved and respected him! But when David came along, Saul became jealous. Saul killed thousands, but David killed ten thousands! All of a sudden, everything Saul already had was not enough.
This is the curse of comparison. It is impossible to be happy with what you have if you are comparing yourself to someone else. Don’t do it! Comparing yourself to others is a waste of time. Celebrate what God has given you. Praise Him for the victories He has given into your hand! Don’t look at what you’re missing, or what other people have that you don’t. Instead, look at everything God has done. He has done great things in your life. Isn’t that worth celebrating?
You mean everything to God. So why does it matter how you stack up against anyone else?
Father, help me to be thankful for everything I have. You gave me the gift of life. You saved me and set me free! Help me to take my eyes off other people, and put them back on You, in Jesus’ name!
