Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Shall the ax boast itself against him who chops with it? Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it? As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up, Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood! – Is 10:15
Assyria was a nation used by God! He gave her great victories and used Assyria to overcome many enemies. But pride caused Assyria to forget her place. She got sick of being servant, and instead wanted to become master.
We are the instruments of God’s handiwork; not the authors. There is only one Author! We are in trouble if we ever exalt ourselves as though we were the ones in charge. You are a tool in the hand of God! We must never forget that He is the one who uses us, and not the other way around. You were designed to be used for God’s glory; not to use God for your glory!
I don’t know about you, but I am so grateful I don’t get to do whatever I want to do with my life. God has a plan for me! And I get to lean on Him to make all the important decisions: where I’m supposed to go, what I’m supposed to do, and who I’m supposed to become.
But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and all we are the work of Your hand. – Is 64:8
Lord, use me! I am an instrument in Your hand. I am a humble servant, whom You call Your friend. I am so grateful for Your purpose in my life, in Jesus’ name!
